More than 200 professors and academic staff have reportedly resigned from Kaduna State University (KASU) amid growing concerns over poor working conditions and the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government–Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Agreement.
The development comes as the ASUU-KASU chapter has issued a two-week ultimatum to the university management and other relevant authorities to address the outstanding issues affecting academic staff.
ASUU ISSUES TWO-WEEK ULTIMATUM
The ASUU chapter at Kaduna State University has given the relevant authorities 14 days to resolve the issues raised by the union.
According to the union, failure to address the outstanding demands within the stipulated period could result in a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike at the university.
However, the threatened strike has not commenced, as the union is currently operating under the two-week ultimatum.
WHY ARE LECTURERS RESIGNING?
The reported resignation of more than 200 professors and academic staff has been linked to concerns over working conditions and unresolved welfare issues.
The development has raised concerns about the university's ability to maintain adequate academic staffing if the situation continues.
ISSUES RAISED BY ASUU
Among the major concerns reportedly highlighted by the union are:
Non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government–ASUU Agreement
Outstanding salary arrears
Promotion arrears
Excessive workload for academic staff
Non-remittance of pension contributions
Other outstanding welfare-related issues affecting lecturers
ASUU is calling for these matters to be addressed to improve the working conditions and welfare of academic staff at the university.
POSSIBLE STRIKE ACTION
If the demands are not resolved within the 14-day ultimatum, the ASUU-KASU chapter could proceed with the threatened indefinite strike.
Such action could potentially affect lectures, examinations and other academic activities at Kaduna State University.
Students and members of the university community are therefore advised to remain calm and follow official updates from the university and ASUU regarding the development.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
The current development concerns a strike threat and ultimatum, not an ongoing indefinite strike.
Further developments are expected as the university management and relevant authorities respond to the demands raised by the union.
